    Description

Scarce 1802/1 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle, AU50 NGC

1802/1 $2 1/2 AU50 NGC. Type of Bass-3007, R.4. Despite a stingy mintage of 3,035 pieces, three die marriages are known for the 1802, all of which share a common obverse. The present reverse marriage is noted for a bold die line from the upper left shield corner. The remaining luster is substantial and there are no obtrusive abrasions. Struck from lightly clashed dies. While all 1802 Quarter Eagles are traditionally referred to as overdates, no examples are known that display an irrefutable underdigit, and many numismatists regard the final digit as merely repunched. (#7650) (NGC ID# 25F6, PCGS# 7650)

    Weight: 4.37 grams
