Description

1802/'1' Quarter Eagle, BD-1, VF35
Pleasing Color and Surfaces

1802/'1' $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, VF35 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c, cracked and clashed; there is a perfect outline of a star in the field in front of Liberty's neck and partial wing feathers from the eagle are impressed into the obverse behind Liberty's hair. BD-1 is the most plentiful of the three 1802 quarter eagle die pairings, although it is still itself scarce with only 90 to 120 examples believed extant. In the past, this issue was thought to be an 1802/1 overdate, although it is now understood to be a normal date with what is likely a die break or defective punch present within the loop of the 2. This example is evenly struck and only lightly worn, with medium honey-gold patina overall. A couple old, faint pinscratches in the right obverse field are not discernible to the unaided eye. Population: 6 in 35, 69 finer (5/15).
