Rare 1802/1 Quarter Eagle, Incredible MS 63 Preservation

1802/1 $2 1/2 MS 63 PCGS. The 1802/1 is the most common issue in the Capped Bust Right quarter eagle series after only the final-year 1807. We do not intend for this statement of fact to be misleading, as all of these issues are both absolutely and conditionally rare. Of the 3,035 pieces originally produced, survivors are few enough in number to earn an R.9 ranking (81-90 pieces believed extant) from Taglione.
It has been three years since we have offered an 1802/1 quarter eagle at this extraordinary level of preservation. Nicely colored in green-gold hues, the surfaces reveal modest reflectivity in the fields at certain angles. The otherwise bold strike show some softness over the central features. There are a few scattered abrasions, but a planchet void along the lower left reverse rim is the only noticeable pedigree marker. (NGC ID# 25F6, PCGS# 7650)
