    1802 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS61
    Overdate Status in Doubt

1802 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS61 NGC. A connecting die line joins the ball of the 2 to the center of the diagonal, and that is likely the source of the mistaken overdate identity. We are not sure who first suggested that the 1802 quarter eagles are overdates, but early 20th century numismatist Waldo Newcomer was unsure when he wrote: "Possibly struck over die of 1801."

A faint field scratch and minor surface marks on each side prevent a higher grade to this lustrous greenish-gold quarter eagle. The strike is a trifle weak at the centers, and the left obverse and reverse border are poorly defined due to adjustment marks. Census for all 1802 varieties: 11 in 61, 11 finer (11/19).
