    Description

    1802 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS61
    Doubted Overdate Status

1802 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. BD-1, R.4. For many years all three varieties of the 1802 quarter eagles, from a single obverse die, have been described as overdates. Perhaps that was a result of the distinct overdates found on all 1802 half eagles. However, close examination clearly shows that the quarter eagles have a normal 2, and there is no evidence of an overdate. A connecting die line joins the ball of the 2 to the center of the diagonal, and that is likely the source of the mistaken identity. Unfortunately, some sources, such as the Guide Book, continue to perpetuate the overdate myth.
This pleasing piece is finer than the average NGC grade of 56. A faint field scratch and minor surface marks on each side prevent a higher grade to this lustrous greenish-gold quarter eagle. The strike is a trifle weak at the centers, and the left obverse and reverse border are poorly defined due to adjustment marks. Census: 11 in 61, 14 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25F6, PCGS# 7650)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
