    Description

    Near-Mint 1804 Quarter Eagle
14 Star Reverse, BD-2, Condition Rarity

1804 $2 1/2 14 Star Reverse AU58 NGC. BD-2, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. The 1804 quarter eagle is known from only two die varieties, the 13 Star Reverse BD-1, High R.6, and the 14 Stars Reverse, BD-2. Together they comprise the reported mintage of 3,327 pieces. Bass-Dannreuther estimate that from 162 to to 214 examples survive of both varieties combined, the vast majority, of course, the more-available BD-2 14 Stars. With an early gold coin of such rarity, this is an issue most collectors will never own in any condition. When one factors in the near-Mint State grade of the present piece, the rarity becomes exponentially greater. Most of the original mint luster remains, although a loupe reveals a mixture of Mint-made planchet adjustment marks and tiny contact marks on both sides, with the adjustment marks quite prominent in the lower reverse center and rims right and left. The fields display considerable prooflike effect nonetheless, with attractive orange-gold color. Census: 15 in 58, 12 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# BFVT, PCGS# 7652)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
