    Description

    1804 BD-2 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Late Die State, 14 Stars Reverse

1804 $2 1/2 14 Star Reverse MS62 PCGS. BD-2, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a, with obverse die cracks from the rim to the bust right of the 4, and behind the head from the hair upward to star 7. John Dannreuther writes: "The only example seen is the ANS coin." Publication of that reference led to the discovery of a few more late die state pieces, although examples are still rarely encountered. This example is the fifth late die state piece we have handled, and it is far finer than any of the previous four pieces that were all graded AU.

Although not a "terminal" die state, meaning a state that would cause the die to be retired, this is the latest die state known to Dannreuther, or to us. In his text, Dannreuther implies that 80% of 1804 14 Stars quarter eagles are early state coins from a perfect obverse die, and that just under 20% are middle die state coins with the crack right of the 4 but no trace of the crack behind the head. We suggest that only a dozen, perhaps fewer, of the late die state coins with both die cracks exist today.

Only 25 1804 quarter eagles are graded Mint State at PCGS and NGC, combined. Those coins include 14 certified as MS61, nine graded MS62, and two called MS63. Those grading events certainly include a small number of resubmissions. This splendid green-gold example has sharp central details with minor adjustment marks on the lower left reverse that create weakness on a few of the stars. Population: 7 in 62, 2 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# BFVT, PCGS# 7652)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
