    1804 14 Stars Reverse Quarter Eagle, AU53
    Lustrous BD-2 Example

1804 $2 1/2 14 Stars Reverse, BD-2, R.4, AU53 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a, showing a small die crack running from the rim to the bust right of the 4 in the date. The 14 Star reverse is sufficient to distinguish the two varieties of 1804 quarter eagles, as both share the same obverse die and the other pairing has the 13 Star reverse. The 14 Star reverse was also used to strike the JR-2 dimes of 1804, although it is unclear which coinage came first according to John Dannreuther; neither the gold nor silver coins seem to show any die cracks or problems that would indicate a later die state. This AU53 piece shows scattered ticks and scrapes on the honey-gold surfaces consistent with the grade, none of them overt. Planchet adjustment marks are confined to the reverse rim in the area around and above UNITED ST, and some strike weakness shows on the eagle's left (facing) claw and tailfeathers. Much luster and good eye appeal show throughout both sides. NGC reports four in AU53 and 40 finer, most of them in AU55 and AU58 (11/15). (NGC ID# BFVT, Variety PCGS# 45510, Base PCGS# 7652)
