    Description

    1805 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU58
    Scarce Low-Mintage Issue

1805 $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6121, BD-1, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. Only a single die pair is known for the 1805 quarter eagles, minted in the tiny amount of 1,781 pieces, The obverse die was nonetheless overdated to produce the 1806/5 quarter eagles as well, and the hardy reverse die was used not only for the 1805 quarter eagles but the 1806 and 1807 pieces as well, plus more than 150,000 1807-dated dimes.
It seems astounding to call such an early gold coin variety "merely" very scarce or R.4, Bass-Dannreuther estimating that 100 to 150 survive in all grades. The strike on the present near-Mint State piece is sharp save for the immediate centers. The surfaces show a pronounced olive-gold tinge complementing an overlay of reddish patina. A few light planchet adjustment marks appear in the center reverse, and several small, stray abrasions are evident, consistent with the grade. Population: 12 in 58, 6 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# BFVV, PCGS# 7653)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
