Description

1805 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS60
Rare in Mint State, Few Are Finer

1805 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS60 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. Even in the best of circumstances, quarter eagle dies seldom exceeded 10,000 impressions before they failed. The 1805 BD-1 reverse is perhaps the most notable exception, having struck all 1805 quarter eagles, both varieties of 1806 quarter eagles, and the sole 1807 quarter eagle variety -- after which it was pressed into service one more time striking over 150,000 1807 dimes (its final use). This 1805 quarter eagle's obverse developed faint die cracks early on, including one above Liberty's cap to the tops of LIB of LIBERTY. Uncirculated definition exists on both sides of this 1805 quarter eagle. Shallow adjustment marks angle downward from the upper-left rim across the eagle's head and horizontal shield lines. Otherwise, only minor marks dot the smooth and lustrous, green-gold surfaces. NGC Census: 2 in 60, 13 finer (4/26).
