    Description

    1805 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS61
A Great Rarity in Mint State

1805 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS61 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b, showing a light crack through the top of the date and another through stars 5-7 and the LIB in LIBERTY. Harry W. Bass, Jr. noted repunching on reverse star 11 but no other diagnostics for this only known die variety. The Capped Bust Right quarter eagle type commenced in 1796 and lasted through 1807, but the combined mintage of all ten Guide Book issues amounted to only 16,452 coins. Uncirculated examples of any date or variety are genuinely rare and exist primarily in low grades. The 1805 has a surviving population estimated at fewer than 150 pieces in all grades combined. This MS61 example is near the Condition Census. The satiny straw-gold surfaces are relatively smooth, showing only light chatter for the grade. Under magnification, wispy adjustment marks can be seen in the vicinity of the date and across the portrait. Some lightness of strike is visible in the centers. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 2 in 61, 5 finer (1/18).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 8763.
