    Description

    1805 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, XF45
    Remarkable Color and Eye Appeal

1805 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, XF45 ANACS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. This is a simply incredible coin, particularly in the view of a collector seeking an original, "crusty" Draped Bust type coin. Immediately apparent are vivid, uniform hues of bronzed orange which deepen to vivid violet and plum around the design elements. The high points of the motifs show medium honey-gold color. There are no bothersome abrasions and the overall eye appeal is incredible. The Choice XF grade is fully deserved in regards to detail remaining. The coin is evenly struck, with a few faint adjustment marks appearing briefly over the high points of the shield and clouds.

BD-1 is the only die variety for the 1805 quarter eagle, and it is scarce in all grades; likely only 100 to 150 examples survive, many of which have been cleaned or exhibit unsightly surface imperfections. This magnificent coin is a true rarity for its quality and eye appeal.
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2008), lot 3239.
