    Description

1806/4 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle, AU58
    Scarce BD-1 Variety

1806/4 $2 1/2 8x5 Stars AU58 NGC. Breen-6122, BD-1, High R.4. Two varieties of quarter eagles were minted in 1806, both are overdates, and both are quite scarce today. The present coin is a representative of the BD-1 variety, characterized by the last digit of the date punched over a 4, and the arrangement of the obverse stars in an 8x5 pattern. The 1806/4 claims an estimated mintage of 1,136 pieces, and John Dannreuther estimates a surviving population of 75-90 pieces in all grades. Currently, NGC has certified seven coins in AU58, with eight examples finer, while PCGS has also graded eight specimens in near-Mint condition, with four pieces finer (9/10).
The present coin displays pleasing greenish-gold surfaces, with areas of prooflike reflectivity. As frequently seen on this issue, the strike is a bit soft on the central devices, especially on the reverse. The obverse exhibits extensive die cracks through the stars on the left side and another through the tops of the letters in LIBERTY.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# BFVW, PCGS# 7654)
