Description

1806/4 8x5 Stars Two and a Half, AU55
Low-Mintage BD-1, Middle Die State

1806/4 $2 1/2 8x5 Stars, BD-1, High R.4, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, showing a thin die crack along the top of LIBERTY and faint cracks through the obverse stars. Two 1806 quarter eagle varieties exist and each is an overdate. The present B-1 variety shows the 6 in the date punched over an underlying 4, while the BD-2 die pair displays a previous 5 beneath the 6. While the underdigits may be confusing when viewed, the obverse star arrangement makes attribution easy. BD-1 is the 8x5 star configuration and BD-2 shows a 7x6 obverse star placement. Together, these two die varieties struck a mere 1,136 pieces combined. BD-1 is encountered about three times more often than BD-2, with a 75 to 90 piece survival according to Dannreuther's estimate. Flashy fields are partially prooflike on this coin. The central devices show light circulation wear and a scattering of faint abrasions, yet the Choice green-gold surfaces retain bold definition. Eye appeal is strong for this very scarce variety.
