    Description

    1806/5 Quarter Eagle, AU53
    Rare BD-2 Die Marriage

1806/5 $2 1/2 7x6 Stars, BD-2, High R.5, AU53 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b, obverse cracked and lapped. The strike is bold and even, although the lower obverse and upper reverse rims are slightly ill-defined. Some reflective surface appears in the protected regions of the fields amid warm honey-gold patina, and a few minor marks are consistent with the grade. A horizontal strike-through (mint-made) in the left obverse field should not be mistaken for a post-strike abrasion.

BD-2 is the rarer of the two 1806 quarter eagle varieties with perhaps only 25-35 pieces known in all grades. This same die pair was previously used for the 1805-dated coinage -- the head die was overdated and annealed for 1806 usage. The tail die was well-made and lasted through the remainder of Draped Bust quarter eagle coinage, as well as more than 150,000 1807 dimes. Cross-usage of reverse dies between dimes and quarter eagles during this period was not uncommon, as the two denominations shared the same design and were nearly identical in diameter. Census: 1 in 53, 12 finer (3/16). (NGC ID# BFVX, Variety PCGS# 45513, Base PCGS# 7655)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
