Description

Rare 1806/5 Quarter Eagle, One of 480 Struck

1806/5 VF 30 Rim Filed. In the quarter eagle series of Robert Scot's classic design, only the 1804 13-Star reverse has proven to be more elusive than the 1806/5. A total of just 480 pieces were struck from reworked 1805 dies, a procedure also used on quarters and half-dollars from the previous year. Perhaps as few as a dozen pieces exist in all grades today. This piece is not without its problems, several large obverse abrasions, rim irregularities on the reverse, and a series of scrapes across the eagle's shield that might be construed as adjustment marks. A rather pleasing orange patina is seen in the recessed areas.
