    Description

    1807 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU
    Popular Issue for Type Collectors

1807 $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. BD-1, R.3. The 1807 Capped Bust Right quarter eagles were produced in an amount that sounds meager by most standards -- 6,812 coins -- but that total was more than the number reported for the first seven years (inclusive) of the denomination's existence, from the first-year 1796 through the 1802/1. Yet only a single die pair was used for all the coins struck, the obverse new (of course, since it bears the 1807 date), the reverse a reuse from the 1805 BD-1. This bright greenish-gold piece displays some expected high-point wear over surfaces that are problem-free, with the exception of some small field marks. Interesting raised lathe lines, parallel and slightly curved, appear on the central to lower portrait of Liberty, left over from the die production process. Diagonal planchet adjustment marks run through the shield and right side of the scroll on the reverse, and a small planchet indent appears on the third vertical shield stripe. An attractive example of this early type coin, certified in a green-label holder.
