    1807 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU58
    Final Capped Bust Right Issue

1807 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. BD-1, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. The Capped Bust Right design was retired after 1807 and the final mintage of quarter eagles was a modest 6,812 pieces. Only one die variety is known for the date and the surviving population numbers about 250-350 examples in all grades. High-grade specimens are very scarce. This was obviously the only use for the obverse die, but the reverse was a remarkably resilient die for the time. It had been used previously to strike all the quarter eagles in 1805 and 1806, and was used to coin all the dimes and quarter eagles in 1807, as well.

This attractive near-Mint specimen displays lustrous, lightly abraded yellow-gold surfaces with a small rim bruise at 5 o'clock on the obverse. Close inspection with a loupe reveals a few faint adjustment marks on Liberty's bust tip. The design elements are well-detailed, but the hardy reverse die was beginning to show its age. Something caused a small depression at the juncture of the shield and eagle's neck. Eye appeal is quite strong for the grade. Census: 32 in 58, 42 finer (4/13).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# BFVY, PCGS# 7656)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
