Description

1807 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, AU53
Attractive Draped Bust Issue

1807 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.3, AU53 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. Red-gold surfaces contain hints of blue-steel around the peripheral devices. A light linear scratch through the hair below the ear is not immediately noticeable. Wear is light, and there are no areas lacking in detail to suggest weak striking. In the context of the Early quarter eagle series, the 1807 is a "high mintage issue" -- with high mintage meaning 6,812 coins. Only the 1821's mintage of 6,448 comes close, and the next highest, 1804, comes in at around half that level. Even so, with the high attrition rate stemming from the melting of many examples in the 1820s and 1830s due to their gold content of more than $2.50, relatively few survived to the present day. Limiting the search to choice examples further limits the pool of potential candidates, making the present offering even more desirable to both series specialists and type collectors alike.
