    Description

1807 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle, AU55
    Final Date of Design, BD-1

1807 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. The Capped Bust Right design was retired partway through the year in 1807, but not before 6,812 quarter eagles of the old design were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Only one set of dies was used to strike the entire mintage. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the Large Stars reverse die was the one used to strike all quarter eagles of 1805, 1806, and 1807. The 1807 Capped Bust Right, Large Eagle quarter eagle is the most available year of the type, with a surviving population of 250-350 examples in all grades.

The present coin is an impressive Choice AU specimen, with just a trace of wear on the well-detailed design elements and some faint planchet adjustment marks on the bust and the obverse rim, above LIBERTY. The reverse shows a little softness on the shield and arrows. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and retain significant amounts of original mint luster. The overall presentation is most attractive. Population: 22 in 55, 52 finer (2/17). (NGC ID# BFVY, Variety PCGS# 45514, Base PCGS# 7656)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
