    1808 Quarter Eagle, Sought-After AU55
BD-1, Sole Variety of the One-Year Type

1808 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU55 PCGS Secure. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b. There is some doubt that the early die state (Die State a) even exists, since it is unverified in the references and unlikely to surface among the 125 to 150 known survivors from a meager mintage of 2,710 pieces. All known specimens show a light die crack behind Liberty's cap to star 8, while a later die stage features a crack through the date. This example lacks the crack through the date.

Die failure was not a factor in the 1808's low mintage; rather, lack of demand in commerce placed the quarter eagle low on the list of Mint priorities. Following the February 26, 1808 delivery of 2,710 coins, no more quarter eagles were struck until 1821. Thus, the 1808 issue was a one-year design and an instant necessity for type collectors (although it was not immediately recognized as such). It displays newly hired Assistant Engraver John Reich's Draped Bust to Left, Large Bust design, with his "signature" notched star 13.

Today, the issue is considered a momentous gold rarity. Date and gold type specialists eagerly vie for Choice examples such as the present coin. The greenish-gold surfaces retain much of the original mint luster and sharp definition on the central motifs. As always, the 1808 lacks dentilation throughout much of its circumference (both obverse and reverse), with associated weakness at the stars and legends. This example is like most 1808 quarter eagles, showing some light adjustment marks -- here, they are barely visible above TES OF AMER at the legend and do not extend beyond the letter tops.

Only slight wear is visible on the cap folds and some feather tips. Marks and abrasions are limited to a few widely separated ticks, none of which are notable in their importance. Vibrant surfaces command attention with outstanding eye appeal. Those lacking an 1808 quarter eagle will do well to consider this Choice About Uncirculated two-and-a-half, which is seldom seen any finer.
