    1808 Quarter Eagle, VF Details
    Capped Bust Left, BD-1
    Only Date of the Type

1808 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4 -- Graffiti -- NGC Details. VF. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c. The design of the quarter eagle was switched from the old Capped Bust Right motif to the new Capped Bust Left design by John Reich part way through the year in 1808. Only 2,710 examples of the new design were struck before the end of the year, as the quarter eagle denomination was not really useful in the national economy of that period. In fact, the Mint suspended coinage of the quarter eagle denomination after 1808, and no more were struck until 1821. By then, the design had been modified slightly to the Capped Head Left motif, making the 1808 quarter eagle a scarce, one-year design type. The coins were heavily melted in later years and the surviving population numbers no more than 125-150 examples in all grades. As might be expected, the 1808 is always in demand from series specialists and type collectors alike.

The present coin shows some wear on the design elements, but much interior detail remains intact on the central devices, and the antique-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, aside from a large letter H that was inscribed in the left obverse field. Like most examples of this issue, the dentilation is weak on both sides. This piece was struck from a late state of the dies, with a die crack from the cap through the stars on the right and another crack through the numerals in the date. John Reich's signature notched star 13 is barely visible in the NGC holder.
