    Description

1808 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle, XF Details
    In-Demand One-Year Type Coin, BD-1

1808 $2 1/2 -- Edge Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. BD-1, R.4. The 1808 Capped Bust Left quarter eagle is a popular one-year type coin, from a small mintage of 2,710 pieces. The new design was engraved by John Reich with a large bust of Liberty facing left. This design was also used on half eagles until 1813, but no quarter eagles were struck between 1808 and 1821, so the 1808 is the only quarter eagle of this type. A single die variety is known for the date, with a surviving population of 125-150 examples in all grades and conditions.

The present coin retains much interior detail on Liberty's hair intact and the lustrous orange-gold surfaces show a scattering of minor abrasions. The rim shows several irregular dents and bruises, indicating some repair was attempted at one time.(Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# BFVZ, PCGS# 7660)
