Description

PCGS 1808 MS 60. We expect fierce competition when this lot is offered. As all gold enthusiasts know, this date is always in strong demand by date collectors as well as type collectors. The usual grade is VF-XF with an occasional AU available, but mint state specimens are of the highest order of rarity with only 10 coins having been certified by the combined staffs of both the major services. The centers are strongly struck with finely detailed hair curls and full plumage on the eagle. As always, the borders are weak. Apparently this is a die flaw inherent in the design of the coin and may well have contributed to the early demise of the denomination in this year. Good luster with a few small marks in the fields. The only mentionable surface blemishes are a slightly curved lint mark on the lower neck of Liberty and a diagonal scratch on the horizontal shield lines.
