Description

Choice AU 1808 Quarter Eagle

1808 AU 55 NGC. An essential one-year type coin that is very rare with only 2,710 pieces struck. From that original mintage fewer than 2% survive in all grades. Breen speculates that the low survival rate may be due to the weak borders on all known coins which exposed them to undue wear. This is a choice, almost uncirculated coin that retains much of the original mint luster, especially around the protected portions of the devices. Well struck in most areas, but showing some localized weakness on the stars on the right side of the obverse and the eagle's wing tips. A few small adjustment marks are also noted on the right side of the obverse.
