Description

High Grade (AU 58) 1808 Quarter Eagle

1808 AU 58 PCGS. An essential one-year type coin that is very rare with only 2,710 pieces struck. From that original mintage fewer than 2% survive in all grades. Breen speculates that the low survival rate may be due to the weak borders on all known coins which exposed them to undue wear. This is a bright, nearly uncirculated coin that retains much of the original mint luster, especially around the protected portions of the devices. Well struck in most areas, but showing localized weakness on the stars on the right side of the obverse and the eagle's wing tips, as usually seen. Numerous small abrasions are scattered across each side with the most obvious ones being a milling mark behind the hair curls of Liberty and a scratch that connects the bottom of the scroll to the feathers at the back of the eagle's neck. A lustrous and quite attractive example of this scarce and always-in-demand type coin.
