Description

1821 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, AU55
Important First Year Of Type

1821 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.5, AU55 NGC. Lovely green-gold surfaces exude originality. Minor abrasions are present on both sides, but none individually stand out. Striking weakness is limited to the feathers just left of the shield.

The 1821 quarter eagle is the first issue of this denomination in 13 years, and introduces the Capped Head design type to the quarter, eight years after its debut on the half eagle in 1813. The quarter eagle was the outcast of U.S. denominations at the time, as it was too large to be used in commerce, unlike the quarter dollar and lower denominations, but was also inconvenient to be used in large transactions, for which half eagles and half dollars were preferred as the largest denominations of their respective metals. This explains the large gaps between mintages, as with the 13 year pause between the 1808 and 1821 issues, as examples were only produced when bullion depositors specifically requested quarter eagles.
