Fresh, Prooflike MS 63 1821 Quarter Eagle--Second Finest Example Certified

1821 MS 63 PCGS. After thirteen years of noncoinage, a few banks apparently began to ask that the quarter eagle denomination be produced again, possibly to be used as Christmas presents or souvenirs as Breen suggests. Robert Scot, then 77 years old, copied his 1813 half eagle design and translated it into a smaller format. The new coins were minutely smaller than in years past, 19 mm. vs. 20.6 mm, but the weight remained the same by increasing the thickness of the planchets. The fields of this piece are bright and prooflike, as typically seen; but the striking details are atypically soft on each side, this no doubt accounting for the MS 63 grade on this otherwise pristine coin. There are virtually no abrasions present on either side that merit individual mention, the piece presenting as a gem except for the already mentioned soft strike. Probably no more than a couple of dozen pieces exist today in all grades. This is the second finest example certified, and is bettered only by a single MS 66 graded by NGC (2/99). From the Palmerston Collection. (NGC ID# BFW3, PCGS# 7662)
