    Description

Mint State 1824/1 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle

1824/1 $2 1/2 MS 61 PCGS. After a twelve-year hiatus, the Philadelphia Mint resumed quarter eagle production in 1821 using Robert Scot's crude adaptation of his 1813 half eagle motif. Never a popular denomination, the mintage figures of the Capped Head Left quarter eagle series remained as small as its Capped Bust Right and Capped Bust Left predecessors. In addition, many of these coins were melted as international gold prices rose in response to increased silver production in Latin America.
The second issue in Scot's short-lived series, the 1824/1 registers an extant certified population of 25 pieces in all grades. Numerous contact marks, including several that have partly effaced Liberty's eye, account for the low Mint State designation. The balance of the features are, however, sharply defined. Both sides are bright and readily reveal their prooflike finish. NGC and PCGS combined account for 4 examples in MS 61 with 4 finer (9/99). (NGC ID# BFW4, PCGS# 7663)
