    Description

Near-Mint 1825 Quarter Eagle, Rare BD-3 Die Marriage

1825 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Breen-6129, BD-3, High R.6. Although the 1825 has a tiny emission of only 4,434 pieces, three die marriages are known. BD-2 is the usual variety, and shares the same obverse with BD-3, but the latter has a different reverse promptly identified by the location of the second T in STATES, which is directly centered above the I in PLURIBUS. This T-I attribution rule is applicable to many denominations from the 1820s, and is an unintended gift by engraver John Reich to later generations of numismatists. This attractive piece is bright yellow-gold and retains a goodly portion of its initial mint luster. The strike is good, and there are no distracting marks.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FG, PCGS# 7664)
