Description
1825 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle, MS61
Recut 5, Centered Fraction, BD-2
Rare Terminal Reverse Die State
1825 $2 1/2 BD-2, High R.4, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die
State b/b. The quarter eagles of the 1821-1834 era are dominated by
low-mintage issues. Quarter eagles were not popular in commerce at
that time, nor were the coins used by everyday Americans since the
average daily wages were well below $2.50. Banks did not favor
them, either, because it was more convenient to use half eagles.
The five dollar pieces were double the face value, thereby
requiring half the number of coins. As a result, quarter eagles
were usually produced only when specifically requested by
depositors, limiting production to isolated small runs. The 1825
quarter eagle claims a circulation strike mintage of only 4,434
pieces.Three die pairs are known for the 1825 issue. On this example, the 5 in the date has a bold flag and is repunched. The fraction is centered under the arrow fletching. The BD-2 reverse is carried over from 1821 and is shared with the 1825 BD-1 variety. This example is in its terminal die state for the reverse, with a rim-to-rim die crack that extends from the edge above the right side of the first T in STATES to the wing junction, through the eagle, exiting along the right side of 2 and to the lower edge. This is an undesignated prooflike example that displays glittering green-gold surfaces. Numerous light abrasions do little to diminish reflectivity in the obverse and reverse fields. Mirrorlike flash exists within the shield recesses. All 1825 quarter eagles are scarce and this terminal reverse die state is decidedly rare. NGC Census (all 1825 varieties combined): 14 in 61, 18 finer (12/25).
