Description

1825 Quarter Eagle, AU55
Very Rare BD-3 Die Marriage

1825 $2 1/2 BD-3, High R.6, AU55 PCGS. Green-gold surfaces contain reddish highlights. A few old nicks on the face are not distracting, and an old dent near star 12 is noted for pedigree purposes only. Striking weakness is minimal, even on the high points. After a massive drop in mintage from 6,448 in 1821 to 2,600 in 1824, the mintage of quarter eagles rose again in 1825 to 4,434. This time, it was accompanied by an increase in die marriages from one to three, making it the only 1821-1834 date to sport multiple die marriages. Of these, BD-2 is by far the most common, with an estimated 80-100 examples known as per Bass-Dannreuther, where BD-1 and BD-3 are much scarcer, with only 12-15 examples known. Our archive shows only five sales, with just an MS61 and an AU58 grading finer than the present offering. The rarity of this die marriage and infrequency of appearance, coupled with the choice surfaces of this specimen, make it an important offering for the quarter eagle specialist.
