    Description

    1825 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS61
    Virgil Brand Specimen
    Second Finest of Six Known

1825 $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. CAC. BD-1, R.7. John Dannreuther suggests that eight to 10 examples of this rare variety are known, although the present cataloger believes that only six are known. Harry W. Bass, Jr., is credited with the discovery. He purchased his specimen, an amazing double-struck example, from Numismatics, Ltd., in October 1974. It is likely that he only later identified the new die marriage. The Bass specimen was plated 84 years earlier in the December 1890 sale of the Thomas Cleneay collection that the Chapman Brothers sold at public auction. The Bass coin is plated in the Bass Museum Sylloge and in the Bass-Dannreuther early gold reference, and it is on display at the ANA Museum in Colorado.
The present cataloger identified a second example in the January 2000 Bowers and Merena Rarities auction. That coin had appeared earlier in the Virgil Brand sale, and is the same coin offered today. Four additional pieces have been identified since that time. Another example appeared in the October 1994 James Stack sale, reappearing in the July 2004 Richmond Collection sale, and later in the October 2005 Atlanta Sale. The ANS has an example, another appeared in Auction '85, and one additional piece was offered in the November 1988 Bowers and Merena auction. We are unaware of any others.
This lovely prooflike Mint State piece has brilliant yellow surfaces with delicate green overtones. It is sharply struck and shows only a few faint hairlines and other surface marks. A small planchet depression joins the fourth lowest feather in the left (facing) wing, serving as an important provenance marker.
Ex: Virgil Brand; Brand Estate; Bowers and Merena (11/1983), lot 88; Bowers and Merena (6/1984), lot 1018; Bowers and Merena (1/2000), lot 298. The Brand catalog notes this was either from Charles Steigerwalt, privately, October 30, 1893, or from B. Max Mehl (5/1916), lot 110.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FG, PCGS# 7664)
