Desirable 1825 BD-2 Quarter Eagle, MS61

1825 $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. BD-2, R.4. The obverse has a recut 5, and the reverse has the stem ending over the upright of the D. Both dies appear to be perfect with no die cracks or clash marks. Approximately 80 to 100 examples still exist in all grades, with only about a dozen that grade MS60 or finer, including this piece.
There are three different varieties of 1825 quarter eagles known, rather significant for a date with a mintage of just 4,434 coins. BD-1 is a new discovery by Harry Bass who identified the variety from a remarkable double struck piece. The present cataloger identified the second known piece in the Bowers and Merena January 2000 Rarities Sale. Since that time, John Dannreuther has identified several other examples, with a present population estimated at 12 to 15 known. BD-2 is the common die marriage, earlier known as Breen-1. Perhaps as many as 100 examples in known in all grades. BD-3 is the other rarity in the series a population about the same as BD-1.
Housed in a green-label PCGS holder, this brilliant and reflective piece has limited surface marks and presents excellent eye appeal. The details are well defined and there is no evidence of weakness on either side. Proof examples were coined from this die pair, and those struck immediately after the proofs were most likely to have reflective, mirrored obverse and reverse surfaces. Population: 10 in 61, 13 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P5)
