Second Finest Known of the Issue

1825 $2 1/2 MS66 NGC. Breen-6128, BD-2, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, struck from perfect dies with no clash marks, die cracks, or lapping on either side. The total mintage of quarter eagles in 1825 was reported as 4,434 coins, from three different die marriages, the combination of two obverse dies and two reverse dies. The varieties designated as BD-1 and BD-2 used a reverse die that had been used earlier for the 1821 quarter eagles.
With an estimated population of 80 to 100 coins, the BD-2 is the only available 1825 quarter eagle variety. The other two varieties are both major rarities with an estimated population of 12 to 15 coins each, according to Dannreuther. The present piece is the finest NGC-certified 1825 quarter eagle, while PCGS has graded one finer PR67 coin (9/11). The finer PCGS certified specimen, graded MS67, appeared in Auction '88 (RARCOA, 8/1988), lot 1872. We believe the present example is the second finest known 1825 quarter eagle.
This impressive Premium Gem has sharp design motifs. The brilliant yellow obverse is fully prooflike with satin luster on the devices. The reverse is also pristine with satin luster. The fields are reflective though not as deeply mirrored as on the obverse. This amazing coin, the second finest known, behind the aforementioned MS67 specimen, is a coin destined for the finest cabinet.
