Mint State 1825 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle Rarity
1825 $2 1/2 MS 61 NGC. With thickly frosted devices and contrasting, glassy fields, this early quarter eagle possesses the eye appeal of a higher grade. Scattered contact marks and an overall scuffy appearance do, however, merit the low Mint State designation. While the typical 1825 quarter eagle shows softly impressed features on the obverse portrait, the present coin displays full detail throughout.Marginally more available than the 1824/1, the 1825 is the only Capped Bust Left quarter eagle that has claims to "type coin" status. Lest this label distort the true significance of this lot, we note that this issue is among the rarest quarter eagles of any design with survivors that number no more than 90 pieces in all grades. Population: 7 in 61, 4 finer (9/99).
