    Description

Extremely Scarce 1826/5 AU 50 Quarter Eagle

1826/5 $2 1/2 AU 50 PCGS. The 1826/5, one of a minuscule 760 coins produced, is by far the lowest mintage date among the five Capped Head Left quarter eagles issued before a size reduction was implemented in 1829. Their high intrinsic value led to immediate hoarding, leaving three of the other four issues, all with mintages several times larger than the 1826/5, on approximately the same rarity plain. Only the 1825, although still a very scarce issue, can be seen with any greater frequency. The surfaces here are an even olive-gold with normal bluntness on the obverse stars. Faint die clashing can be seen on the reverse, a normal occurrence in the minting process that the inexperienced collector might confuse with scratches in the fields. Population: 1 in 50, 13 finer (10/99). (NGC ID# BFW5, PCGS# 7665)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
