Description

Extraordinary 1826/5 Quarter Eagle, AU50

1826/5 $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6130, BD-1, High R.5. A rarity among rarities, the 1826/5 overdate quarter eagle is an extremely elusive issue. Official mintage records indicate that just 760 pieces were coined. John Dannreuther feels that the overdate is actually a repunched 1826/6 variety, and he further believes that many of those reported in 1827 were dated 1826. There were a reported 2,800 quarter eagles struck in 1827, so the latter date should be roughly four times more plentiful than the former. Our auction archives show seven 1826 quarter eagles and 14 1827 quarter eagles offered since 1993.
The present piece is a wonderful green-gold example with typical bluntness on the obverse stars. Faint clash marks are evident on the reverse. Population: 1 in 50, 11 finer (12/08).
