    1827 Quarter Eagle, AU55
Sole Die Pair for the Year

1827 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. BD-1, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. The entire mintage of quarter eagles in 1827 was accomplished using a single die pair. Obviously a new obverse was required to carry the date 1827, but even so, some examples struck during the year may have borne other dates, as was common Mint practice at the time. Bass-Dannreuther estimate that of the reported 2,800 pieces struck, anywhere from none to nearly 40% may have been dated other than 1827. The reverse die was, in fact, carried over from usage in both 1825 and 1826. This piece shows buildup in some of the peripheral devices and light field chatter from a short spate in circulation. A few singular marks are confined to the reverse, namely a patch of thin scrapes below the olive stem, a longer mark into the right field from the top arrowhead, and a couple of scrapes in the shield interior. The surfaces display deep orange-gold color with a couple of scattered daubs of violet.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# BFW6, PCGS# 7666)
