Description

Overlooked 1827 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle

1827 $2 1/2 MS 61 PCGS. Surviving examples of the 2,800 quarter eagles produced in 1827 are similar in rarity to the 1826/5 despite the latter issue's lower mintage of only 760 pieces. Akers correctly asserts that the 1827 is an underrated date that is much more difficult to locate than the 1824/1 and 1825. While the typical 1827 quarter eagle is apt to show a weaker strike than its 1825 or 1826/5 counterpart, the present example is not unattractive from this viewpoint. There is slight incompleteness of detail on the hair over Liberty's head, but the balance of the features are crisply defined. Surprisingly mark-free with original green-gold patina, the surfaces are a bit too deficient in luster to warrant a higher grade. A rarity of significant proportion that deserves special attention from advanced gold collectors. (NGC ID# BFW6, PCGS# 7666)
