Description
1829 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS63
White-Gold Surfaces; Scarce Issue
1829 $2 1/2 BD-1, High R.4, MS63 NGC. Lovely white-gold
coloration overlays lightly abraded surfaces, which are
semi-prooflike on the obverse. Almost all obverse details are
well-defined, but there is some reverse weakness on the shield and
surrounding wing feathers. As with the half eagle, 1829 saw the introduction of the Closed Collar to quarter eagle production, providing more uniform diameters and squarer rims, facilitating stacking. It also led to higher rims, making the design less susceptible to wear.
Similar to every issue of "Old Tenor" quarter eagles, mintages were low and surviving populations are very scarce to rare. According to Bass-Dannreuther, there are between 70 and 90 examples known of this date, making it the third most difficult after the very rare 1834 and the slightly scarcer 1833. This is reflected in the population reports. Half of all certifications have received a Mint State grade, which is logical, as these late issues did not widely circulate since they contained more than $2.50 in gold, making them more profitable to melt. Populations peak in MS63 and drop off from there, making a Choice Mint State example the ideal choice for the connoisseur of Early gold.
