Fully Prooflike MS64 1829 Quarter Eagle, One of the Finest Examples Known

1829 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. The 1829 Quarter Eagle is an important type coin, not only because of the short life of the modified, small size Capped Head Left series, but also because of the 1829's status as the first year of this type. Of the 3,403 pieces produced, no more than 125 coins are believed extant today. Most survivors grade AU or low-end Mint State, but at the MS64 level this piece is clearly one of the finest known. The fields are fully prooflike, as often seen, and the striking details are completely defined in all areas. Even yellow-gold color is seen over each side. Frankly, we are hard pressed to find surface defects that can be reliably used as pedigree markers. On the obverse, there is a short scrape out from star 1, and a tiny alloy spot between star 3 and the denticles. But these are so small that they may not turn up on photographs in older auction catalogs. Population: 6 in 64, 2 finer (10/02).
