Not Sold Description
1830 AU 58 NGC. From an original mintage of 4,540 pieces, only several dozen 1830 quarter eagles are believed to survive today. Taglione proposed a population of 75 to 85 examples, far fewer than other estimates of up to 200 pieces, and we tend to favor his view. The survival rate of this series is remarkably low, compounded by the mass meltings of this and other denominations once the intrinsic value of the gold exceeded the coin's face value. However, that being said, the 1830 is possibly the most available issue of the Small Planchet type with a small number of near-mint and mint state pieces certified. This is a well struck example that has bright, semi-prooflike fields. On the lower obverse two small planchet flakes are noted by star 1 as are a couple of minor abrasions on the lower truncation of the neck of Liberty. Population: 8 in 58, only 8 finer.
