    Description

AU 1831 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle
BD-1, Only Dies for the Date

1831 $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Breen-6134, BD-1, R.4. Only one pair of dies was used to strike 1831 quarter eagles, and given the low mintage of 4,520 pieces, it comes as no surprise that the issue is rare across all grades. This apricot-gold example is crisply struck aside from the left border of the eagle's shield, and no marks are remotely worthy of discussion. Although each date is individually rare, a collection of reduced diameter Capped Head quarter eagles (1829 to 1834) is achievable, with the 1834 Motto as the key to the short but very challenging series. Certified in a green label holder. Population: 4 in 50, 44 finer (8/11).
Ex: FUN Signature Auction (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 4695, realized $13,800.
