Description

1831 Quarter Eagle, AU50
BD-1, Mintage of 4,520 Coins

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, or c/c. No evidence of clashing. Only one pair of dies was used to strike 1831 quarter eagles. Given the low mintage of 4,520 pieces, it comes as no surprise that the issue is rare across all grades (110 to 125 survivors). This apricot-gold example is sharply struck aside from the left border of the eagle's shield. A single mark under star 13 merits mention. Although each date is individually rare, a collection of reduced diameter Capped Head quarter eagles (1829 to 1834) is achievable, with the 1834 Motto serving as the key to the short but challenging series. Certified in a green label holder.
