    Description

    1831 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU58
    Lovely Original Surfaces

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU58 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The 1831 quarter eagle had a paltry mintage for the period, consisting of just 4,520 coins. Survivors are scarce, numbering only in the 110 to 125-coin range. Just a single die variety is known, employing the sole 1831-dated obverse and the tail die of 1830. This reverse was employed for the entirety of every succeeding issue in the series until 1834, five uses in all.

Due to the limited production run, many examples of this issue show semiprooflike fields, and this is evident to certain degree on the present coin. No loss of detail is noted due to wear, and we note only light friction over the high points of the devices and in the fields that precludes a true Mint State grade assignment. Glowing honey-gold surfaces yield deeper shades of coppery-red color in the recesses on this undeniably original coin. Slight striking softness is noted on the left-hand portion of the shield, but the remainder of the relief elements are well brought up. A lovely near-Mint date or type representative.
