    Description

    1831 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU58
    Lovely Original Surfaces

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, AU58 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The 1831 quarter eagle had a paltry mintage of just 4,520 coins. Survivors are scarce, numbering between 110 and 140 pieces. Just a single die marriage is known, employing the sole 1831-dated obverse and the reverse die of 1830. This reverse was employed for the entirety of every succeeding issue in the series until 1834, five uses in all.

Due to the limited production run, many examples of this issue show semiprooflike fields, and this is evident on the present coin. No loss of detail is seen due to wear, and we note only light friction over the high points of the devices and in the fields. Marks are minimal, with a nick to the right of Liberty's eye and a light reverse scratch being noted. Glowing honey-gold surfaces yield deeper shades of copper-red in the recesses of this undeniably original coin. The left-hand portion of the shield is a bit softly struck, but the remainder of the design elements are well brought up. A lovely near-Mint date or type representative. Population: 7 in 58, 32 finer. CAC: 2 in 58, 6 finer (11/17).
    Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2015), lot 5252. (NGC ID# BFWA, Variety PCGS# 45525, Base PCGS# 7671)

    Weight: 4.37 grams

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
