Description

1831 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Beautiful Reflective Green-Gold Surfaces

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS62 NGC. Sharply detailed with satiny greenish yellow-gold luster, the surfaces have only a few minor marks to limit the grade. The obverse field is slightly reflective and the reverse field is prooflike. The Capped Head quarter eagles and half eagles coined prior to June 28, 1834, are among the scarcest gold type coins. The half eagles' scarcity stems from tiny survival rates compared to the mintages. The quarter eagles had similarly low survival rates, but mintages of just a fraction of the half eagles. In 1831, just 4,500 quarter eagles were minted, and only 75 to 100 of those survive today, a mere 2% survival rate. Census: 7 in 62, 24 finer (11/25).
