Description

1831 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, MS62
Single Die Pair for the Year

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther die state uncertain but likely c/c, shortly after the lapping to remove clash marks. A one-die-pair year that is very scarce regardless of condition, the 1831 quarter eagle poses a significant challenge to the Guide Book collector as well as the early gold specialist. This MS62 representative is pleasing for the date with surprisingly reflective sun-yellow surfaces that show traces of orange and overlying patina. Excellent detail, especially on the reverse, with generous all-around eye appeal. Population: 6 in 62, 24 finer (8/15).
Ex: Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 11/2004), lot 8088.
