    Description

    1831 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, MS63+
    Reflective and Relatively Unmarked

1831 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS63+ PCGS Secure. CAC. No obvious die cracks or clashing appears on this piece, usual for the issue, even though the 1830 reverse was reused here and carried onward through the series' end in the 1834 With Motto issue. The trivial field chatter on both sides, rather than singularly mentionable contact marks, determines the grade on this attractive late-series Capped Head Left quarter eagle. The mintage was reported at 4,520 coins, and this coin shows the prooflike reflectivity that most specimens of the issue undoubtedly showed when they left the Mint (the vast majority of which went into the melting pot a short time later, when the Mint Act of 1834 made their bullion value exceed their face value). The honey-gold surfaces are extremely attractive, making this late-date issue another prime candidate for a top-notch type set. PCGS reports three in MS63, this piece in MS63+, and 22 submissions finer, up through a single MS67 (10/15).
